My spouse and I went mattress shopping today and experienced extreme sticker shock. We were looking for a king size mattress to replace one that has gotten a little soft and saggy and is, to the best of my husband's recollection, about twenty-five years old. It was an excellent mattress when new but the time had come for a change. The last bed I bought was a nice firm queen size bed for my apartment guest bedroom. It cost just a little over $300 and everyone who slept on it said it was very comfortable. It seems that prices have gone up and up and up in the last seven years. Prices today ranged from $6,000 at Ashley Furniture (we immediately eliminated that one) to about $2,000 (with sales prices and coupons) at Wolf Mattress and Klopfenstein Furniture in Leo. Both had nice firm mattresses. Then it came down to service. Did they deliver? One said yes and install for a reasonable fee, $100. The other said they could roll it up and deliver it in a big box to our front door but we would need to get it inside and up stairs. Do you haul away the old mattress and box spring and frame? One said yes, for a small fee, $50. The other said no but they could suggest a charity that might want it. Would you care to guess which one we went with? It starts with K.
